THE BABY DOLL

History

As its name suggest the original Baby Doll was made out of just that ..wool from a Baby's doll!. This once filled my fly box with as many different colour variations as I could think and as they say practise makes perfect!. It is really a basic imitation of a fish fry and when fished in the margins can be deadly.

The Pattern

Hook: Size 8 or 10 short shank

Thread: Black

Underbody: Fine lead wire or gold wire

Tail: White wool

(Alternatively you could use Lime Green wool which is also very effective as in the picture above)

Body: White wool

Rib: Gold Wire

Hackle: N/A

Overbody: White wool...the extra wool from the tail once tied in is pulled over the back and tied in at the head

Fishing the Fly

Fish the fly quite deep and because of the weighted underbody this should give good action under the water. Takes are quite violent since the trout treat this as a Fry and trout being predatory as they are will snatch at it with quite some force. It is also worthwhile casting into the margins with an unweighted fly so it hangs in the surface as it is imitating a injured fry.

Conclusion

A good all round fly and very worthwhile keeping a few in your box for that afternoon when nothing will tempt the Trout!.
