History
This fly was one of the first flies I learned to tie in the Tuesday after school Fly-Tying Class held by Dave Roberts at Porth County Comprehensive School, Rhondda Valley, South Wales. It soon became a favourite of mine after my first trip Fly-Fishing to Llanllawddog Lake, Carmarthenshire.

The Pattern
Hook: Size 10 or 8 short shank
Thread: Black
Underbody: Fine lead wire or gold wire
Tail: Peacock herls to form tail and overbody
Body: bright Gold lurex
Rib: Gold Wire
Hackle: Soft Honey Hen
Fishing the Fly
I usually fish this fly on a long leader, say about 10 - 12'. Afetr casting out the reteive is started almost immediately since the fly when dressed has a weighted underbody. The retreive that I find works well is the figure of eight and so is a very constant, slow retrieve. Keep watchin just behind the fly as the Trout will follow quite close before snatching the fly. Takes are usually slow and quite often fishing just over a weedbed is a good tactic since the peacock herls on the fly is similar to the shells of snails which are found within the beds.
Conclusion
The Jersey Herd was one of the very first flies that I tied and fished at Llanllawddog Lake, Carmarthenshire along with the Baby Doll. It is quite often a fly which is neglected these days but can stand up for itself with all the modern creations available today. If you ever go to Garnffrwyd Trout fishery then this would be on my list to take. Fish in the margins and also from the Jetty's on the island should provide very good sport!.
